NEWSPAPER AND THE PICTURE NEWSPAPER. THESE AMAZING PAPERS WERE PUBLISHED BY STEVE LAWRENCE OF WHOM SO LITTLE IS KNOWN OR RECORDED ONLINE THAT THIS NEXT SENTENCE MAY WELL BE THE SUM OF IT ALL... HE WAS TALL AND HANDSOME, WORKED AS AN ART DIRECTOR FOR RECORD LABELS, WAS A FRIEND AND A ONE TIME LOVER OF PETER HUJAR, AND HE DIED IN THE 80s*. AND HE WAS BRILLIANT!

So this is it. The most exciting, must-have-it-now newspaper we have ever seen. Candy Darling on the cover of Newspaper Vol.1 No.5 published in New York in 1969. This is the forerunner of The Picture Newspaper, which we wrote about last week. We have never seen these ever before.

This is the work of Richard Bernstein, who designed every Interview cover from 1972 to 1987. A naked Jim Morrison dances with Mick Jagger dressed as the cowardly lion from The Wizard of Oz . The two girls on the right seem to add an air of plausibility to the otherwise rather impossible poetry of the collage!

These two pages - the woman in the roll neck and the woman in the scarf - are composed as a double page in the issue. They are, of course, photographed by Peter Beard. Double wow!

Now these two double pages come from what could be called issue 10. The actual title is Big Dirty Pictures and you have to see it to believe it. It is about as much fun as you can have at work!
Why? Why not?! Who wants to open boring emails with people with clothes on anyway?! Newspaper was outrageous. It was schlocking! There were nine issues in this black and white original format which equals about twenty actual gasps when the big double pages are first opened up.

Well, have you ever seen this Candy Darling double page?! We thought perhaps we had but... maybe in a dream! Google don't have it (yet). Anatomically speaking it is atomic! But the type and art direction no less of a super surprise. Even more amazing, folded out it is about half the size of a house! <3 indeed.

The link we are posting here will take you to the largest slideshow we have put together. There are 96 images and we by no means photographed everything. It is the big bang of postmodernism. Huge.

And finally, pop artist Mel Ramos's extraordinary contribution to Big Dirty Pictures . Whatever your views on love-making with leopards, this is a truly stunning centre spread of any magazine.
